In Granny’s Garden
The inspiration for this book (my first) was a competition in one of the Sunday papers – to write a story suited to the style of a well-known children’s illustrator, Nicola Bailey.
My story in verse - about a small boy who encounters a dinosaur in his grandmother’s garden - didn’t win the competition, but my agent hung on to the typescript and about a year later showed it to a young artist who had walked into her office.
Mike Wilks was the artist, and his illustrations were absolutely perfect. Sadly we didn’t collaborate again as our careers diverged, his into books that he wrote and illustrated himself, mine into adult fiction. But it was a great start for both of us.
