The Dreaming Stones
Like The Grass Memorial this novel, set in Roman Britain and the present day, uses inter-leaving time frames each with its own protagonist.
The theme of the book is ‘home’ and what it means to its three protagonists: Claudia, a young army wife leaving Rome for the first time to be with her husband in his cold, northern garrison; iconic sixties’ model Rags, now the chatelaine of a stately home near Hadrian’s Wall; and divorcee Bobby, who has moved north to start a new life. It chronicles the huge changes in the women’s lives, how they deal with them and the decisions they reach.
I like to look at the similarities between the past and now, and to help me do that I have introduced a ‘time-traveller’ into the story, in the shape of a wonderful dog…
Who hasn’t felt that old buildings hold in their fabric the memories and echoes of past events? That (and the Roman tradition of leaving stones with messages for the dead) is what gave me the title for the book.
