A
Dangerous Thing
The Divided Heart
These two novels were the first I ever wrote, when I was in my
early twenties. ‘A
Dangerous Thing’ is a time-shift thriller about an academic,
recuperating in the country following a breakdown, who believes
he has witnessed a murder that is yet to happen. As events and
circumstances pile up, and seem to point to a particular victim,
and killer, he becomes involved in a race against time to prevent
the murder happening.

‘The Divided Heart’ is a love-story, originally intended
for Mills & Boon, who turned it down – unsurprisingly,
since in those days M & B fictional love affairs ended with
the closing of the bedroom door, and my story has an unmarried
couple making out on the hearthrug… The book’s also
notable for a smart media dinner party in which the main course
is that super-cool dish (wait for it) – moussaka! I think
this tasty Greek shepherd’s pie must just have hit the bistros
of the Kings Road in 1969.

Both of these early novels, though not published back then, stand
up pretty well to the test of time, and I had no problem seeing
them
in print after more than thirty years – though I was permitted
to write an introduction explaining their history. One thing that
struck me was that my authorial ‘voice’ hasn’t
altered that much. My strengths and weaknesses were the same then
as now, though I hope experience has taught me to ‘accentuate
the positive’.
