An
Imperfect Lady
This came about because of my fascination with the people that
my friends fell in love with. Cupid’s a knavish lad and no
mistake! I was reminded of the wonderful Robert Graves poem ‘A
Slice of Wedding Cake’, which begins: Why have such scores
of lovely, gifted girls/Married impossible men? True or what? Also
I wanted to subvert the literary genre, especially popular at the
time, of the woman whose whole life is fuelled by the desire for
revenge on the man who done her wrong. My heroine Adeline Farrell
- ‘Addy’ – is in many ways the woman with everything:
a happy and privileged upbringing, friends, wealth, and artistic
talent. But when it comes to love, she’s a disaster, a classic
case of the woman who loves not wisely but too well. She does,
however, live life to the full, without regrets. Without giving
too much away, let’s just say her story ends happily, ‘the
world well lost for love’.
As to the title, I asked myself: If there is such a thing
as ‘a perfect lady’, how much more interesting would
an imperfect one be?
