In
Granny's Garden
My very first published book was this children’s story in
verse, about a boy who discovers a brontosaurus in his grandmother’s
back garden. It was actually written in response to a competition
in one of the Sunday supplements, for a story to be illustrated
by
the artist Nichola Bailey of ‘Tiger Voyage’ fame. It
didn’t win, but received an honourable mention, and my clever
agent stashed it away in a drawer. When about a year later a young
art teacher wandered into her office and said he wanted to be an
illustrator, she produced ‘Granny’s Garden’…he produced
some wonderful pictures, and we were off – first
in the States and then over here. Since then Mike Wilks has gone
on to great things, notably with ‘The Ultimate Alphabet’,
and there’s no doubt that, if not for him, my brontosaurus
might still be languishing in captivity.
