The 'Laura' books

This sequence of four children’s books for 4 – 7-year-olds, is based on Flora Thompson’s delightful memoir of a rural Victorian childhood. The publisher, Hutchinson, had already found the perfect illustrator in Kate Aldous, and needed the right text for her to work from. Luckily, the first story I produced, ‘Laura and Old Lumber’, fitted the bill, and I wrote three more after that: ‘Laura and Edmund’, ‘Laura and the Lady’ and ‘Laura and the Squire’.

They’re charming, beautifully produced little books and once again I was indebted to a talented artist for giving my writing a tremendous boost – Kate’s pictures and my words went together really well.
